Bird flu vaccines tested on humans

21-03-2008 | |

It has been reported this week that Vietnam’s Health Ministry will allow the use of locally-produced bird flu vaccines to be tested on humans on a trial basis.

The Military Medical Institute will use vaccines produced by local company Vabiotech for the 8-month trial vaccination period, beginning this month. The vaccines were tested on animals in 2007 and apparently proved effective.
To date, Vietnam has reported a total of 106 human cases of bird flu infections, including 52 fatalities, in 35 cities and provinces since bird flu first hit the country in December 2003. It is believed that the World Health Organization has yet to confirm the latest case.
