Elanco opens new Vaccines Innovation Center

Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly has opened of a state-of-the-art Vaccines Innovation Center whose intentional design will enable scientists to address some of animal health’s most pressing issues. The aim of the facility is to focus research on unmet needs in animal health, including antibiotic alternatives.

Work being conducted in the Vaccines Innovation Center is a tangible result of Elanco’s eight–point antibiotic stewardship plan, which was rolled out last June. The multifaceted plan is an aggressive means to safeguard antibiotics for future generations while protecting animal well-being. Beyond antibiotic alternatives, the center will also house research into several companion animal vaccines, including the exploration of more ‘patient friendly’ delivery technologies, which could make annual vaccinations easier for both the pets and the veterinarians who care for them.

Nutriad introduces mobile app for mycotoxin management

Multinational feed additives producer Nutriad has launched an innovative app to support producers in making the right decisions as far as mycotoxin management is concerned. Mycotoxin risk assessment is the scientific evaluation of the probability of the occurrence of known or potential adverse health effects resulting from animal exposure to mycotoxins. The newly launched web application, Mycoman, can be used as a management tool for complete mycotoxin hazard assessment and all information required for a correct product application based on the level of mycotoxin contamination in the feed. It informs about mycotoxin challenges and based on the challenge levels calculates the necessary and effective dosage of Nutriad mycotoxin deactivators product line.

Trouw Nutrition adds to its NIR spectroscopy module

Trouw Nutrition has announced the addition of a new quality parameter to its popular NutriOpt precision-feeding system. Using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, this new parameter will enable farmers, feed manufacturers and others to rapidly assess the quality and levels of the reactive lysine content in their raw materials. They can then use this information to optimise nutrition and improve profitability.

Forming part of the NutriOpt precision-feeding system, NIR enables producers to predict the quality of reactive lysine in raw materials. And it’s fast: NutriOpt NIR provides a full, easy-to-understand nutritional report within minutes. It also offers an unrivalled number of calibration lines for reactive lysine, as it is available for soybean meal, rapeseed meal, sunflower meal, palm kernel meal, fish meal, and meat and bone meal.

Pilgrim’s gains approval for $24M expansion project

US poultry processor, Pilgrim’s Pride, has received state approval for a $24 million expansion project at its Mayfield, Kentucky, poultry processing complex. The project, which will begin on Oct. 12, 2016, includes the removal or relocation of existing processing equipment and the installation of new equipment to enable the facility to transition from a fresh foodservice and debone operation to a debone portioning operation by July 2017.

The transition will enable the facility to process larger birds and provide greater efficiency and service to key customers. Upon completion of the project, the plant will increase its live weight production by about 1 million pounds per week. It will also provide more than 155 additional jobs and will provide for construction of 75 additional chicken houses by local family farms.
