An overnight raid led by American armed forces resulted in the deaths of 13 Iraqi poultry workers in a village near the city of Baquba.

The workers had been sleeping in the fields of Bushaheen village in an area known as Al-Salam, about 90 kilometres northeast of Baghdad.

According to an Iraqi police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, in addition to the 13 dead there were also four wounded and 10 arrested.

A US military spokesman in Baghdad acknowledged there was an incident in the area but refused to give details, saying the raids were part of an ongoing campaign against Al-Qaeda militants in Iraq.
