Lawsuit filed against Pilgrim’s Pride
Chicken growers in Arkansas have filed a lawsuit against Pilgrim’s Pride following the company’s decision to close its plant in the region.
Reports state that the lawsuit accuses Pilgrim’s Pride of fraud, deceit and misrepresentation.
According to grower Robin Dunlap, grower losses are greater even than those of the plant employees who lost their jobs when Pilgrim’s made its decision in August to close the facility.
“This was 99% of our income,” says Dunlap, who reported investing $500,000 into her farm. “They had promised us; we had been under the impression we were going to be getting chickens.”
Pilgrim’s Pride stated that the plant closings are part of efforts to return the company to profitability amid rising feed costs and an oversupply of chicken in the marketplace.
