Two New Zealand turkey farmers have beaten 86 competitors from across the globe to win the inaugural World Egg Throwing Championships.
The competition was held in a Lincolnshire village in the UK at the weekend.
The winners, Andrew McKay and Nigel Tiffin, won with a throw of 72 metres, after competing in two preliminary heats. They put their victory down to hard practice, but said the uneven ground and blustery conditions were difficult to cope with.
Competitors had flocked to the event, part of the annual Swaton Show, from as far afield as Russia and Bulgaria with ages ranging from seven to 67.
Organiser Andy Dunlop said: “We expect next year’s event to draw in more of the world’s finest and go from strength to strength.
“We are also hoping for full Sports Council recognition by then. This should be in the Olympics.”
Swaton Show organisers said that despite strong competition from England’s World Cup clash with Ecuador, show attendance was up and well over GBP6,000 was raised for local charities – up GBP2,000 on last year’s effort.
The world record egg throw was set in 1978 in Texas, when local Johnny Dell Foley threw a fresh egg 323ft 2ins (98.51m) to his cousin Keith Thomas – without breaking it.
