Romania investigates poultry pile of carcasses

A Romanian company has been accused of dumping 47 tonnes of animal carcasses on the outskirts of Bucharest.

The accused company, which denies the charges, Protan, could be fined up to £10,000 (US$20,000). Additionally, those found responsible could face jail sentences.
The carcasses are rotting in temperatures of 38 degrees C (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) and the stench is extremely strong. Furthermore, this poses a danger to humn health.
“This is not our rubbish. We don’t use plastic bags, we use rubble for disposal,” a Protan employee told the BBC.
When asked who was responsible for dumping the carcasses he blamed abattoirs or large animal farms.
Nearby the head of the Environmental Protection Agency for Giurgiu County, Clara Adam, was supervising the clean-up. She said that Protan was asked to clear all the carcasses, and that representatives from the Veterinary Agency will disinfect the area.
