UN avian flu funding boosted by the US

18-10-2007 | |

The US will soon increase its financial support given to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization’s avian influenza control and prevention programme by $38 million.

According to the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the funds will be allocated to highly pathogenic avian influenza containment and control activities, to reduce disease transmission and to increase communication to raise public awareness and preparedness.
“Avian influenza will probably stay with us for several years to come,” said FAO’s Chief Veterinary Officer Joseph Domenech, adding that the support from the US will enable the FAO to continue and strengthen avian influenza prevention and control campaigns in affected countries.
US support to the FAO avian influenza programme will then reach a total of approx. $63 million.
