US assesses grain competition from Asia

18-03-2008 | |

A team from the US Grains Council went to Australia and the Philippines to asses the feed grain competition in the Asian market during the next 12 months.

Due to drought in mainly Australia, the opportunities to export US grains to this region are promising, according to Council President Ken Hobbie. However, recent rain in Australia means perhaps more competition for the US, as the country will produce more feed wheat and maybe grain sorghum.
In the Philippines, tariff rate quotas protect local corn producers and limit grain imports. But, he says, more interest is being shown in distillers dried grains (DDGS), especially from livestock and feed milling sectors in Australia.
