A 26-year-old Vietnamese woman from Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang has died of bird flu.

The woman was admitted to hospital on 16 March to treat symptoms of coughing, difficulty in breathing, and pneumonia, said Nguyen Minh Tung, head of the hospital’s preventive health centre.

Reports state that a family member has said that she had eaten duck about a month ago just before showing symptoms of the virus and being admitted to hospital.

According to Nguyen Huy Nga, Head of the Department of Preventive Health and Environment under the Ministry of Health, her blood sample will be tested to confirm the case.

Vietnam has reported four human cases of bird flu so far this year, three of them died.

In 2008, bird flu killed five people in Vietnam.
