Australian group campaigns for battery-hen welfare

05-04-2012 | | |

Animal Australia, an environmental group, is launching a campaign this week to improve the welfare of Australia’s battery hens, advocating adoption of EU-like practices.

The campaign will consist of radio advertisements, and other calls for the public to boycott battery-eggs.
Australia’s egg producers are largely represented by the Australian Egg Corporation, which defends current practises, and cites studies that free-range hens are no better off than battery hens.
The Australian Egg Corporation also warns that switching to free-range comes at a cost that would ultimately have to be paid by the consumer.
