Bulgaria fears EU ban on foie gras

Foie gras producers in Bulgaria are mounting concerns over a recent call by MEPs for a EU-wide ban on the production and sale of the product.

The Balkan country is EU’s second largest producer of the delicacy, with some 5,000 people employed in the sector, Dimitar Belorechkov, head of Bulgarian Poultry Breeders Association told local media.

Belorechkov also pointed out that geese and ducks in Bulgaria are no longer forced to live in cages, and therefore expects that the proposed ban will not be carried out.

However as pressure mounts from animal welfarists, who describe the force-feeding process of geese and ducks as “torture”, a group of European MPs recently called for a controversial EU-wide ban on the production and sale of foie gras.

Currently, farming of animals to produce foie gras is banned in 22 EU nations.
