Illegal poultry disposal site discovered in Wales

An illegal poultry disposal site has been found in Wales, arousing concern over the risk of diseases being spread in the environment and the local water system.

The League Against Cruel Sports discovered the mass of rotting bird carcasses in Beulah, South Wales. Peter Black, Welsh Assembly member, asks Carwyn Jones, Minister for the Countryside, what steps will be taken to prevent any threat to human health.
John Campbell, a former veterinary advisor to the Welsh Office: “What is worrying is that we do not know what caused these birds’ deaths. Their presence vastly increases the bacterial load in the area and possibly the local water courses if there is run off. These pits attract predators, such as foxes, rats, crows, hawks etc which can lead to the spread of diseases. Decomposing carcasses are also unfavourable environments for many viruses, and one is thinking in terms of avian flu.”
