Hong Kong has approved imports of poultry meat and poultry products from Lithuanian, which concludes two years of negotiations on the issue.

The possible amount of supplies is still to be determined, according to the report of Lithuania’s State Food and Veterinary Service (SFVS). However, the market participants say that the opening of the new sales market for them is crucial on the background of the recently implemented restrictions on food trade with Russia.

According to the country’s Department of Statistics, export from Lithuania to Hong Kong totalled LTL 82.4 million (US$ 31.2 million) in the first half of this year – an increase of 31% year-on-year to LTL 62.85 million (US$ 24 million).

“We had to prove that our standards of state control, and production standards satisfy the requirements [of the Hong Kong vets] as well as the highest food safety standards,” explained SFVS’s director Jonas Milius.

He also added that many Lithuanian exporters have been waiting for the opportunity to export their products to Hong Kong as the business is considering it as the gate to the more prospective Chinese market.

Veterinary certificates for exporting poultry meat and eggs from Lithuania to Hong Kong are still under negotiation, and should be approved within a couple of months.
