The Union of Poultry Farmers of Moldova has requested the country’s government to restrict imports of poultry products from the US as it hampers the development of the domestic poultry industry and hurts profitability of the locally-based farms.
Ion Bizgu, president of the Union of Poultry Farmers of Moldova sent an open letter to the government asking to stop poultry imports from the US, which currently amounts to about 18,000 tonnes of production per year, and to allocate support to domestic poultry enterprises.
The letter says that because of the unfair competition of the American poultry exporters, Moldovan poultry producers were forced to “abandon their growth potential.”
“Today, we produce 53,000-55,000 tonnes of poultry, broiler meat accounts to slightly more than half. If during the next 3-4 years we will be able to increase the production of broilers by 20,000 tonnes, we will fully cover the domestic demand,” Bizgu stated.
“In addition, in case the state allocated preferences for each kilogram of exported poultry meat we also would be able to compete in the market of the European Union,” Bizgu added.
The government so far has not reacted on the request of the poultry farmers.
