A petition is currently underway in Durham, North Carolina, US, with the aim of lifting the city’s ban on chickens.
The online Durham Chicken Petition has acquired about 535 signatures, according to Kavanah Ramsier of South Eastern Efforts Developing Sustainable Spaces.
To take this to the next step, SEEDS will soon be holding a meeting where representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the side effects, good and bad, of chickens in an urban neighbourhood.
Pros and cons
Opponents argue that chickens contribute to noise pollution, bad smells and compromising the general cleanliness of the city. Advocates, however, argue that chickens produce wholesome eggs, provide fertilizer and add entertainment value to a backyard.
The meeting is intended to help people decide whether to endorse this petition and ask that the City Council legalise the chickens throughout town.
City councilman Eugene Brown says the council will make that decision when the time comes, but that roosters are not invited into the city, although chickens may be received a little more favourably.
