Poultry farms in Bangladesh face loss

Poultry farm owners in the Kishoreganj and Tangail districts of Bangladesh are running into heavy losses due to price hikes and a cold wave.

Khaled Saifullah Sohel, who owns 3,500 chickens, in Beruail village of Rashidabad union of Sadar upazila, was quoted as saying that the production of egg has decreased by 20% during the last few days in the wake of cold waves. Kamrul Islam, a poultry firm owner at Nabinagar village in Sherpur, claimed that 400 out of 2,000 chickens of his farm have died in last few days due to bitter cold.

Political unrest in the country for over two months now is also one of the reasons for the incurring losses, as customers from Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet have stopped buying eggs from their farms since the Eid holidays, said farm owners.

They are also facing problems in preserving medicines and vaccines required for their business, as these are kept in refrigerators, but due to lack of power it was not possible. Farmers face on average a daily loss of over 250 Taka (2.8 euros), and the losses might increase up to 1,500 Taka (17 euros) per day.
