Heavy rain around Taiwan in June has caused agricultural losses totalling NT$548 million (US$18.34 million/€14.46 million), according to the latest statistics released by the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture.
The livestock sector recorded losses valuing €282,300, with the death of around 70,000 chickens and 700 pigs, while the fishery sector suffered losses of €2.172 million, mainly due to the damage of oyster farms in Taoyuan County, northern Taiwan
Meanwhile, crop losses reached €9.40 million, with 14,343 hectares of crops land being damaged, according to the government agency, adding rice paddies, persimmons, watermelons, papayas, leafy vegetables and tomatoes succumbed most seriously to heavy rain and flooding.
