The ‘smart’ bacteria (2005 special)
Salmonella interacts with different cell types within the avian host. Its persistence in poultry is not surprising since the bacteria circumvent potentially harmful host responses to their own benefit and escape from a hostile environment to one where it is safe: the intracellular niche. This ‘smart’ behaviour makes it difficult to control.
