UK Chicken sales not affected by Jamie Oliver’s criticism

Chicken sales were predicted to drop, following the campaign led on by celebrity chefs. However, this week saw an increase in sales despite the criticism on the treatment of birds.

Supermarkets were in fear of a drop in the sales, which is worth £3.5 billion a year, however a negative impact has not been seen.

“This week, daily national sales of standard whole birds are running approximately 7% above the November 2007 daily average,” according to a Tesco spokesperson.

Chefs Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have highlighted the differences between standard and free range chickens.

Leading supermarket chains Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda have reported a minor increase in all chicken sales.
