Interview with Suresh Chitturi: Promoting product innovation to boost egg consumption

Through the launch of Vision 365, the International Egg Commission has set a decade-long plan in motion to develop the global reputation of the egg and with the aim of increasing egg consumption to 365 eggs per person per year. Editor of Poultry World, Fabian Brockötter, spoke to the IEC’s chairman, Suresh Chitturi, about his ambitions.

US broiler farming sustainability report

In 2021, the US National Chicken Council released its first sustainability report presenting an overview of the industry’s progress on the sustainability fronts of the environment, broiler health and welfare, among others. This article looks at some highlights of the report.

Impact of climate change on broiler housing systems

Broiler housing systems must provide an adequate pen temperature and relative humidity, plus optimum air circulation. However, there are growing concerns about the impact of climate change on broiler production, which is negatively affected by heat stress events.

Various adaptation options are available for housing systems to provide climate amelioration for broilers, with ventilation being one of the most important considerations. Photo: Anne van der Woude

Novel approach to reduce cold stress in layers

From heatwaves and climate change, this article looks at managing extremely low temperatures in the winter months through a warmed perch system as a thermal device. How does this affect egg production and egg quality, as well as the hen’s immune system?

Sustainability, health and antibiotic reduction

After 2 years of cancellations, there was a lot to talk about at the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE), which took place from 25-27 January at the Georgia World Congress Centre in Atlanta, Georgia in the US. Poultry World editor, Fabian Brockötter, tells us more.

Despite the travel challenges, approximately 21% of the 22,000 registered attendees were international, representing 110 countries and emphasising the worldwide reach of the show.

Approaching peak poultry and meat consumption

Meat consumption worldwide has quadrupled since 1961, states a report, which notes that 80 billion animals are slaughtered annually to produce 340 million tonnes of meat for human consumption. However, it seems that peak meat consumption has been reached in some countries.

Early experience, gene expression, and lifelong consequences

Studies of early post-hatch feeding demonstrate its impact on lifetime performance in commercial broilers. Excellent nutrition in this phase is shown to enhance growth rates and increase the proportion of breast muscle up to market age. This article looks at the mechanisms behind this improvement and how can we take advantage of them.

Using data to optimise broiler breeder male management

Modern technology is increasingly being used on breeder farms to help farmers make smarter decisions to improve flock performance. These case studies show how sound datasets can help in broiler breeder male management.

Efficiency challenges of cage-free eggs

While cage-free systems are generally less efficient than egg production in cages, the global move towards cage-free egg production continues. In this article, Alltech looks at the economic impact of each, and zooms in on gut health, feather condition, and feed efficiency.

Light colour affects feed uptake and performance

Different colours have different effects on the performance of chickens. This article looks at the effect of light on growth rate, carcass weight, behaviour, blood parameters, and immune response.

Labour shortages slow growth of Eastern Europe’s poultry sector

Due to a number of contributing factors, poultry producers in Eastern Europe are confronted with a fully-fledged labour crisis. This situation could slow production growth and make some of the largest European poultry producers less competitive.

Evolving E. coli strains from farm animals to humans

This article explores the argument that genetic material from E. coli bacteria in farm animals, including poultry, could be contributing to the evolution of deadly pandemic strains in humans.
